Hearing odd sounds emanating from your toilet may make you think you have evil spirits at work that are bent on destroying your sanity. That toilet bubbling and gurgling just doesn’t seem normal . . . and that’s because it isn’t. This may not be a symptom of ghosts, but it is a symptom of a plumbing issue and should not be ignored. Hearing water bubbling is perfect for a water fountain or other water feature, but toilet bubbling is not. One of the following is likely the reason for the noise and should be resolved as soon as possible.
- Vent Stack Issue – If the vent stack has become obstructed, such as by a bird nest, it cannot allow the release of air from the system, but it still has to go somewhere, resulting in the toilet bubbling instead. A clogged vent stack is usually paired with a strong odor in one of the bathrooms. We recommend calling a plumber to take out the blockage.
- Drain Blockage – When one drain in the home has a clog, it can sometimes cause issues in other areas, with a toilet bubbling being one potential outcome. If you notice the toilet bubbling when you run water elsewhere, this is likely the problem. It can also be a result of a septic tank that needs to be pumped out and cleaned. Additionally, there could be a problem with the drain field.
- Pipe Issue – A number of things can be going on with the pipes in your home. A build-up of soap scum or grease, a leak somewhere, an improper drainage angle or the wrong size of pipe being used somewhere in the system can all lead to a toilet bubbling.
