Our team at Marion Pumper has extensive experience in the septic industry, and we can help you keep your septic system in optimal condition. One of the unfortunate side effects of having a private septic system is that sometimes you have to deal with septic odors. In this article, our team will go over a few possible causes of septic odors and what to do in each case.
- Dry P-Traps – If you are smelling septic odors inside your home, it could be because the P-traps in your drains have run dry. All the toilets and drains in your home contain a curved section of pipe called a P-trap, which is supposed to remain full of water at all times in order to create a seal. This seal prevents gases in your septic tank from entering your home. When the P-trap dries out, septic odors can get inside. To deal with this problem, run your taps for a few minutes, and make sure to flush all your toilets regularly to make sure the trap remains full of water.
- Full Tank – Another reason why you might smell septic odors is because the tank is getting full. If you continue to smell odors inside your home even after checking the P-traps, then you are likely due for a septic pumping appointment.
- Cracked Tank Lid – If you are smelling septic odors outdoors, then we recommend checking the lid of your septic tank, as it could be cracked. Fortunately, the solution to a cracked tank lid is simple: you just need to get a new lid. A solid lid with no gaps should seal the odorous gases inside so you don’t have to smell them anymore.
